137 A Review of Gastrointestinal Issues Relevant to Correctional Facilities

I have reflux. I have ulcers. I’m allergic to everything. I have diarrhoea. I had gastric bypass and need special diets. I’m constipated. I need a vitamin. Gastrointestinal issues account for a significant portion of correctional health care complaints and take up a huge amount of health care time. This talk will address the most common issues seen in correctional settings and to provide evidence-based guidance on how to handle the myriad problems that arise.

  • Describe the anatomical components of the GI tract and medical issues relevant to each element
  • Review the medical literature for the understanding of current standards of care for different GI complaints
  • Discuss how to assess GI complaints and determine what is medically necessary to treat
