109 Behavior Change Is Not Accidental: Why Correctional Systems Need Behavioral Experts

Behavior change is not haphazard or accidental. It requires expertise in understanding the function of behavior and how each behavior is reinforced in order to support patients in changing long-standing maladaptive behaviors, such as self-injurious behavior and treatment non-compliance. We will discuss the importance of behavioral experts in correctional settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the basic brain functions that support and sustain learning and behavior
  • Describe schedules of reinforcement and their impact on behavior and behavior change
